Science 2: Week 4

  1. The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.
    1. The big question that was addressed in lab was, "How do you design a playground surface that is safe and durable?" In lab today we made models of playground surfaces and used eggs and what would be the children in the situation of a playground. For our materials we first used a layer of hay in the bowl, a layer of rubber chips, and then topped it off with more hay. Our egg survived this drop at 1 meter, and then we did another trial with different materials. For the second one we used hay and sand mixed together and tested it at 2 meters. Our egg also survived this drop!
  2. A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.
    1. We had an exam in lecture for this week, but there are things from the textbook that relate to what we did in lab. When talking about energy lenses, this is what related to lab the most this week. For bounce, when something springs back, it is storing potential energy, and then when it bounces back it goes to the egg, but the egg does not want it. This is what causes the egg to bounce, which also makes the surface materials fly off or rub against each other and the energy does not transfer back to the egg.
